Detailing the incident in a post on the Scam Wise NI Facebook page today (Wednesday), a Northern Ireland Direct spokesperson said: “A male from Ballyclare was scammed out of £220 when he paid for white goods on Gumtree.

“The sellers delivered it to him nicely wrapped up and dropped it off at his door. Wisely, the victim asked to check it and the males said they would get a knife out of their van to cut off the cardboard; they went back to the van and swiftly drove off. When the victim cut off the wrapping, there was nothing but scrap metal inside .
