Became aggressive at Christening party

A man who became “highly aggressive” towards police officers called to a Christening party in Cookstown, has been ordered to carry out 150 hours of community service on a disorderly behaviour charge.

Twenty-six-year-old Pearse Forgione whose address was given as Hopefield Avenue, Belfast, was said to have verbally abused police and threatening to hit one during the incident at Fountain Road on September 1 last year.

District Judge Eamonn King remarked that the defendant’s “big problem” was that he has a five-month suspended prison sentence hanging over him.

Mr King said he would make no order in respect of the suspended sentence.

But he warned that Forgione had to understand that if he does not comply with the community service order he will be brought back to court and re-sentenced.

Prosecution counsel said police were called to the family get together on August 31 last year and later arrested the defendant for disorderly behavioiur.

She said police told Forgione several times to calm down but he continued to act aggressively towards the officers.

A defence lawyer said the incident happened almost a year ago and since then the defendant has not come to the attention of the police.

She explained that he had been at a Christening party at his partner’s mother’s house and friends had been invited to the event.

The lawyer said Forgione had consumed a high level of alcohol and this had contributed towards his behaviour on this occasion.
