Bumper ‘Banger’ seizure in Ballykeel

ALMOST 900 ‘bangers’ were seized in the Ballykeel area last Saturday evening.

The seizure was made following reports of young people throwing fireworks.

Constable Jock McToal, Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We understand the annoyance that the misuse of fireworks can cause and are pleased to have taken a number of illegal fireworks off the streets. There is no doubt that, in the wrong hands, these fireworks could have caused serious injury.

“Over the next few weeks, high visibility patrols will be operating in hotspot areas to prevent crimes occurring. What might seem like a prank to some young people may actually amount to carrying out an assault or causing criminal damage. I would urge parents to make sure they know the whereabouts of their children and to make sure that they are not engaging in any criminal activity or criminal damage to property.

“We hope that with the support of parents, schools and local community groups we can work to help make Halloween safe and enjoyable.”

Constable McToal added: “I would like to remind members of the public that you need a licence for outdoor fireworks and ask anyone with information about the sale, supply or misuse of illegal fireworks to contact Police on 0845 600 8000. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
