Call for increased patrols after ‘serious’ arson attack on NI home

An MP has called for increased patrols after a second arson attack on homes in a village outside Lurgan, Co Armagh.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the arson attack in Alfred Terrace in Dollingstown during the early hours of this morning (27th April).

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Around 2.45 am this morning, police received a report that a bin had been set up against an oil tank at a property in Alfred Terrace and set on fire.

“One property was extensively damaged and a neighbouring property suffered smoke damage.

“There were no reports of any injuries.

“Enquiries are ongoing and officers would ask anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area or who has any information which could assist them with their enquiries to contact police at Craigavon on 101 quoting reference 121 27/04/19.

“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”

A NI Fire and Rescue spokesperson said it received a call at 2.36am on Monday morning to Alfred Terrace, Dollingstown when two appliances from Lurgan and one from Lisburn were despatched.

“Firefighters were called to an incident where an oil tank was on fire at the rear of a house. Firefighters wore breathing apparatuses and used two hose reel jets extinguish the fire.

“The incident was dealt with by 4.22am and the cause of the fire is believed to have been deliberate ignition.”

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart said: “A house has been burned and it could have had serious consequences with the fire brigade and police having to attend the scene.

“The property is being held by the Police this morning. Anyone with ANY information please contact the PSNI.

“This is the second incident in the same vicinity in the past couple of weeks. I have asked the police to up their patrols in the area to restore community confidence.”
