Cannabis smell in car leads to a search

When police stopped a car there was a strong smell of cannabis in it and a search uncovered a small bag of the substance.

Daniel McAllister (26), Old Court Manor, Lurgan, was fined £200 last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for possession of a class B drug.

He was also fined £100 for not having a vehicle test certificate and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard he was stopped while driving on the Ballynamoney Road, Derrymacash. Police noticed a strong smell of cannabis and a small bag was it was found after a search.

There was also no MOT for the vehicle.

When questioned McAllister said: “Yeah no sweat.”

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said this was the defendant’s second possession offence within a short period of time.

A solicitor for McAllister said that his last conviction was in February and this was the first time he had purchased cannabis since then.

He explained that the car needed minor repairs before it could be put through the MOT.

Judge Bates told McAllister that if he continued to acquire convictions for drugs offences his employer would not be too pleased.
