Charged over Ardoyne rioting

A 25-year-old man arrested in Lurgan has been charged with offences related to rioting in the Ardoyne area of Belfast on 12 July.

The charges include grievous bodily harm with intent, riotous assembly, possession of petrol bombs and throwing a petrol bomb.

The man, who was arrested in the town on Sunday morning, is the sixth person charged with the north Belfast riots.

He is due to appear at Laganside Magistrates Court on Monday.

The riots followed contentious marches past the Ardoyne shops.

Twenty police officers were injured and up to 10 shots were fired at police.

The first parade was by a small group of Orangemen returning from the annual Twelfth of July celebrations.

The second was by a nationalist group opposed to the parade.

Petrol bombs and bricks were thrown at police lines by both nationalists and loyalists. It followed two parades along a stretch of road dividing Catholic and Protestant communities.
