Claimed he would smuggle drugs into prison

He was Rafael Kontras, of no fixed abode, and he was jailed for a total of ten months.

For breaching a restraining order at Albert Mews, Lurgan, on May 31 he was sentenced to six months in custody.

A concurrent three month term was imposed for possession of a class B drug.

Suspended sentences were also put into operation to run consecutively, making a total of ten months.

The injured party contacted police to say that the defendant had been banging on her door in the early hours of the morning.

When police arrived they found him in the hallway. He removed his coat and it looked like he was trying to hide something.

He was searched and they found a yellow latex glove with a finger missing. They found the missing finger and inside it were a large quantity of blue tablets.

Kontras said he was going to smuggle them into Maghberry prison. There were 125 Diazepam tablets and he said they were for his own use.

A barrister for the defendant said he had been in custody since May 31.

He added that a pre-sentence report indicated Kontras was at a high risk of re-offending but asked the court to give him one final chance.

Deputy District Judge, Mr Gerry Trainor, said Kontras had been a serial offender in the short time he had been in this country.
