“Check perimeter fences regularly to identify any weaknesses and rectify immediately. CCTV, security lighting and properly fitted locks will help deter thieves.”

Inspector Magee added that it is not just business owners who need to stay vigilant.

“We’re also encouraging homeowners to ensure that their oil tanks are fitted with proper locks, situated in well-lit areas and not easily accessible from the roadside.

“One of the most important things people can do is look out for their neighbours. If you notice anything suspicious in your neighbourhood, or see unknown vehicles outside premises, note down any important details such as a description or vehicle registration and contact police immediately.
