Community anger as gang of youths ignore Coronavirus warnings at anti-social behaviour blackspot

Police were called after a gang of youths congregated at an anti-social behaviour blackspot to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

It is understood dozens of young people, mostly teenagers and some younger, gathered at the subway on the Portadown Road in Lurgan - a mecca for drugs and underage drinking.

Sinn Fein Cllr Sorchá Mc Geown said: “I know with it being St Patrick’s Day people want to celebrate especially the young ones given they are off school.

“But unfortunately I’m gettin reports of anti social behaviour at the ‘subway’. And another report that a young fella was lying at the side of the road by the factories on the Portadown Road.”

She urged parents to check on their children.

One local said: “There are a lot of elderly people in this area who are frightened enough of the Coronavirus situation without having gangs of hoods causing mayhem.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police received a report of youths congregating in the subway on Portadown Road at around 6.15pm.

“Officers attended and dispersed the youths, seizing a small quantity of alcohol.”
