Antrim and Newtownabbey Council said the claims had not been passed on to them, but staff would examine the area.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: “The council has not received any reports from the public regarding needles in the area, but a team with appropriate equipment including sharps-boxes has been asked to check the vicinity following the enquiry from the Newtownabbey Times.”

A PSNI spokesperson said the incident has not been reported to them.
