Counterfeit notes advice from police

Police are appealing for traders and members of the public to be wary of counterfeit notes after a male attempted to exchange a large number of fake notes at a Bureau de Change on Saturday, February 23.

Police state that shops and other businesses that handle currency should check all notes and contact Police if they suspect they have come into possession of any counterfeit currency. The fake notes on this occasion were Bank of England £20 notes.

Police would ask anyone who may have any information about counterfeit notes to contact them.

Tips to help traders to identify counterfeit notes: Display clear warning signs stating ‘Counterfeit currency checks will be carried out’; ensure store staff are aware of how to examine notes; have a policy for your staff to follow on discovery of a counterfeit note. This should include the retention of the note and contacting the Police, with a description of the person passing the suspect banknote and ensure there are good lighting conditions at cash points.

Genuine notes have raised main printing, a bold and clear watermark, should feel crisp and not limp, waxy or shiny. The print should be clear, sharp and well defined and the colours should be clear and distinct. The security thread should be continuous when the note is held up to the light.
