However the PSNI has denied the social media reports that the dog had been left out in the cold.

Lisburn Council are also investigating and a spokesperson said they were looking into the matter under the Welfare of Animals (NI) Act 2011.

Constable Michael Dinsmore from Moira Neighbourhood Policing Team said; “Police can confirm that a report was received in relation to this incident and this was passed to Lisburn City Council as the lead enforcement agency in relation to this matter.

“PSNI are aware of certain reports in social media that the dog was left outside and froze to death as a result.

“These reports are not true, as confirmed by Lisburn City Council, who attended and dealt with the matter.

“If anyone has any information regarding the dog, which may have been knocked down.

“I can be contacted on the non-emergency number 101.”

A Lisburn City Council spokesperson said: “We did receive a report from the PSNI regarding the death of a dog within the city on Monday, January 19.

“The Council is carrying out an investigation under its enforcement role of the Welfare of Animals (NI) Act 2011.

“Initial findings indicate that the dog died as a result of being knocked down and not as a result of the recent cold weather as is being reported through certain media channels.“No other dogs have been seized from the dog-owner.”
