Drink driver is given five year ban and fined £200

A man detected with excess alcohol on his breath was banned from driving for five years and fined a total of £200 at Londonderry Magistrates Court.

Martin Joseph Wade (54), of Sackville Court, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol, driving whilst disqualified and having no insurance at Glendermott Road on March 26.

The court heard he was seen driving erratically’ and was stopped by police. He was a disqualified driver and a breath test gave a reading of 54 mg of alcohol in breath.

A solicitor said Wade thought his disqualification had run out.

He said Wade was trying to address his difficulty with alcohol.

Imposing penalty, District Judge Peter King said driving whilst disqualified was an extremely serious offence adding that the disqualification was imposed not only to mark drink drivingbut also to protect the public.
