Drug accused is released on bail

A taxi-driver has appeared before Londonderry Magistrates Court charged with possession of £3,000 worth of cocaine with intent to supply.

Canice Joseph Cunningham (40), of Aghamore Park, Strathfoyle, is also charged with possession cocaine and the class C drug Tramadol, on December 19.

The Magistrates Court heard that he was parked in a picnic area on the Glenshane Road when police searched his car.

The court heard police found two money bags in the drivers door, which contained more than 50 deal bags of white powder.

Over 100 Tramadol tablets were allegedly found in the glove compartment of the car.

The court was told a search was also carried out of Cunningham’s home and police seized £2,600 and €400 in cash.

During police interview, Cunningham claimed he had bagged the cocaine himself and it was mainly for his own use.

Opposing bail, an investigating officer said police feared Cunningham would re-offend to in order to recoup his losses as the drugs have a street value of £3,000.

Defence solicitor Brian Stelfox said his client had a form of addiction to these drugs but was not distributing them to everyone around.

District Judge Barney McElholm released Cunningham on his own bail of £500 and ordered him to sign bail at the local police station on a daily basis.

The accused is to appear in court again on January 19.
