Farmers to be consulted over rural crime

Inspector Catherine Magee explains: “Tackling crime against the rural community is a priority for police in Coleraine. We recognise that it is a source of concern to our farming communities and therefore a concern to us. We also understand that the value of items taken can be significant and threaten the livelihood of rural businesses.

“In addition to increased patrols and operations ongoing in the rural areas, we are asking the rural community to help to fill information gaps and act as our eyes and ears. It is extremely important that people remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police immediately.

“Neighbourhood Policing Officers are also currently visiting as many farmers as possible in the Coleraine area and asking three important questions: Where are thieves storing stolen items prior to selling them? ; Where is stolen diesel being offered for sale? What is the market for stolen tools?

“The answers to these questions allow us plan our enforcement actions accordingly.”

Inspector Magee stressed: “We urge members of the community to get in contact with any information in relation to rural crime.”
