Fine and ban after accident at Katesbridge

A driver who collided with a stationary car, appeared before Banbridge Magistrates Court last week charged with driving with excess alcohol in breath and driving without due care and attention.

Gerald William Brown (57), from Burrenwood Park, Castlewellan, was banned for 16 months and fined a total of £350 with an additional £15 offender’s levy.

The accident occurred on 9 January at the junction of May’s Corner and Fernhill Road, Katesbridge.

The injured party was sitting stationary when she saw Brown approach on her right side. He came across and collided with her vehicle pushing her across the road.

Police were called to the scene and Brown was arrested.

A breath sample revealed 65 mgs of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Barrister Justin Byrne said his client was a retired mechanic who was estranged from his wife.

“He is an isolated figure and had been to Dundalk on the day in question, having taken drink on the way home.”

“He lost control on a bend, but didn’t try to drive off instead going over to the other party and exchanging details.”
