Fined for ‘excessive speed’

A motorist caught doing 94mph on Glenshane Road near Castledawson, was fined £265 with four penalty points at Magherafelt Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Twenty-three-year-old Sean Turner from Gorteade Road, Swatragh, was detected on the morning of May 5, 2019.

Deputy District Judge Noel Dunlop heard the detection was made at approximately 9.30am.

A defence lawyer pointed out that the offence happened on a Sunday morning when there was little traffic on the road. He said Turner worked as an auto engineer locally and knew the road as he used it each day. He said the defendant has a clear record and has been driving for about five years.

The lawyer asked the court not to impose a disqualification.

Mr Dunlop remarked that it was an “excessive speed”.
