Firm fined for emissions

A Lisahally-based company was fined a four-figure sum yesterday, Wednesday, for failing to control odour emissions emanating from the site.

Foyle Food Group Ltd (FFG) was fined £3,000 and ordered to pay £58 in court costs at Londonderry Magistrates’ court for breaching conditions of its Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) Permit.

The conviction related to the failure to adequately maintain plant and equipment to control the release of odorous emissions from the Foyle Proteins rendering plant on June 3 last year.

On that date the Northern Ireland Environment Agency received a large number of complaints from residents in the local area about odour from the Foyle Proteins rendering facility at Temple Road, Lisahally, Londonderry. On investigation the Agency found that there had been a significant number of breakdowns of the odour abatement equipment at the rendering plant and that the back-up system for destroying odours had failed to operate.

The Foyle Food Group was convicted under Regulation 33(1)(b) of The Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations (NI) 2003 with contravention of permit conditions.
