The youths, some aged as young as 13, are pelting eggs at cars driving along the Garvaghy Road in Portadown, says a local councillor.

Sinn Fein Cllr Paul Duffy said over the past three nights the gang of between 10 and 20 young teenagers have been terrorising the people of the road including elderly pensioners.

“They are standing up on Ballyoran Hill and pelting eggs at cars driving along the Garvaghy Road, “ he said.

“They are also targeting pedestrians and hitting them with eggs.”,” said Cllr Duffy, adding that this is extremely dangerous.

He said the gang has also been firing eggs at the homes of local residents in the Ballyoran and Churchhill areas also.

He said he was very concerned for the elderly residents.

“Pensioners are now terrified in their own homes. One elderly woman was sitting in her living room watching a soap when she heard a loud bang at the window. She nearly took a heart attack,” said Cllr Duffy.

“These pack of teenagers, some of them girls, are very intimidating. They seem to think it is funny.

“I have asked local shops who said they are not selling eggs to children so I am asking parents and carers to keep an eye out to see if there are eggs missing from your home.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Several reports of youths throwing eggs at houses in Ballyoran Park in Portadown have been received by police in recent days.”

Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Leslie Badger said: “Whilst no permanent damage has been reported to any of the houses targeted in these incidents it is clear to see the upset it causes the residents. People have a right to live in peace and to feel safe in their communities and young people who choose to engage in anti-social behaviour must understand it is unacceptable and must stop.

“Police are committed to tackling issues of anti-social behaviour and regularly engage with residents and community representatives and will continue to do so.

“Parents and guardians must speak to their young people about where they are and who they are with and also warn them of the dangers of getting involved in behaviour which could result in injuring themselves, others, or ultimately, a criminal record.

“We will continue to patrol and area and work alongside our partner agencies, local representatives and the community. I would encourage anyone affected by anti-social behaviour to report the matter to police immediately on 101.”
