Have you poked a policeman yet?

COLERAINE police are encouraging borough citizens to “poke a cop” and join them as friends on their new Facebook site.

Since the digital information site was launched in April of this year, more than 1198 people have already signed up to be followers and police are encouraging more to follow-suit.

Chief Inspector Nicky Thompson, who is Area Commander for Coleraine, described the initiative as “our effort to embrace the Social Media revolution”.

He told this week’s meeting of the District Policing Partnership that the PSNI North Coast page had enjoyed 121,000 post views in the last three months since inception.

“Young people for example all have access to smart phones and communicate by text messaging and via social networking sites so it is important for us that we use a language which is familiar to them,” he explained.

“For us to use such a forum allows us to relay information to our followers instantly.”
