A barrister representing McCullough said he had no previous convictions for assault.

He explained that the defendant and the injured party had been going out for two and a half years and there was lots of drinking in the relationship.

He added that both were very drunk on the night in question and McCullough could not remember anything about the incident.

The barrister said it was unacceptable and very nasty behaviour. The defendant had spent four months in custody.

He added that this offence was out of character for the defendant.

District Judge, Mr Alan White, said McCullough had been subject to a suspended sentence at the time of the incident.

He sentenced him to four months in prison but suspended it for three years.
