‘I thought I was going to die alone’ says stabbed man

A DERRIAGHY man says he is grateful to be alive after he was stabbed while walking along the Towpath near the Hillsborough Road last week.

48-year-old Jackie Bratty enjoys walking to keep fit and had only walked a short distance last Wednesday evening (July 27) at approximately 7pm when he was approached by a male who said, “Give me money, give me money”.

Jackie handed over a sum of money to the man who then demanded more. The man, who Jackie describes as not having a local accent, then punched him and stabbed him with an unknown object.

“I got my wallet out and gave him £60,” said Jackie. “But as I was putting it back in my pocket, the guy heard coins jingling about and he demanded more. When I told him I didn’t have any more he punched me and he then lunged at me. I tried to turn but as I did this he stabbed me in my left hand side. If I hadn’t moved he would’ve got my stomach.”

At this point the robber ran away leaving a disorientated Jackie lying in a pool of blood.

“I have never been so frightened in all my life. I thought that I was going to die alone on the towpath”, he said.

Jackie found the strength to dial 999 on his mobile and was put in touch with Lisburn Police Station. He said the officer who talked to him was like an angel.

“That man spoke to me the whole time I was waiting for the police to arrive. He got me through it and he calmed me down. I didn’t feel alone.”

Jackie was rushed to hospital where he was treated for his injuries which he says could have been a lot worse if he hadn’t turned when the attacker aimed at his stomach. He said: “The doctor said he just missed an organ. I am so thankful to be alive.”

He continued: “Several years ago I had a cancer scare and that was worrying but this frightened the life out of me.”

Jackie is appealing to people to be vigilant when out walking. He said: People who walk with headphones on especially need to be careful because someone could easily just come up on them.”
