Jail for Portrush drug user who scammed granny

A NINE month prison sentence was handed down to a 20-year-old man at North Antrim Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday when he appeared charged with stealing over £4,000 from his grandmother.

District Judge, Richard Wilson, had deferred sentencing of Jason Samuel Murphy, of Dunluce Road, Portrush, from June of 2011 to allow for reports.

However, the defendant appeared in the dock as he is on remand after allegedly committing fresh offences since his last appearance.

The court heard that Murphy faced four specimen charges of fraud after he used Florence Murphy’s ATM card to obtain £4,165.75 in cash during October and November of 2010.

When police called with the defendant on November 9th, 2010, he was said to have assaulted both constables who found him in possession of stolen PSNI body armour, herbal cannabis and cannabis resin. A sixth offence of unlawfully supplying the class B drug was also taken into account.

A solicitor for the defendant said he was unhappy to report that his client’s behaviour had not improved since his last appearance before the judge.

“This is a 20-year-old man who finds himself before the court with the inevitability of facing a jail term,” he said.

Imposing concurrent jail terms for each of the ten offences, Judge Wilson ordered the cache of drugs to be destroyed before telling Murphy: “You were given a chance and this is how you repay it.”
