Large gang of men erect anti-Irish sea border posters in south Armagh town

The gang, of around 25, was seen walking as a group through Markethill at around 7pm last night.

One person who witnessed the group said: “I was disgusted to see a large number of men on the streets.”

Another said: “There also appeared to be flags erected and quite aggressive posters put up about the supposed sea border.

One said: “It is a total disgrace. It was definitely some sort of statement.”

Some of the posters refer to the Irish Sea border.

One sign states: “Markethill stands up.” It quotes Thomas Paine: “I prefer peace but if trouble must come, let it come in my time so that my children can live in peace.”

Another has photos of Taoiseach Michael Martin, Prime Minister Boris Johnston and Deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill with another Thomas Paine quote: “Some people can be reasoned into sense, and others must be shocked into it” with the banner quote ‘Play your part in opposing the Irish Sea Border’.

Another poster appears to have a painting depicting the arrival of UVF guns at the beginning of the last century.

Another poster states: “The Northern Irish man and woman are born free and equal in dignity and rights to their English, Scottish and Welsh brothers and sisters.”

It is understood the PSNI were informed.
