The measure is part of the PSNI’s annual Season’s Greetings operation to keep people safe and deter criminality.

Mid and East Antrim’s District Commander Superintendent Michael Simpson said: “Things are very different for all of us this year with the current pandemic however our commitment to keeping people safe and working with communities will remain the same.

“This year our aim is to deliver safer streets for shopping and socialising (as the Health Protection Regulations permit), safer roads and public transport, safer homes for those at risk of domestic abuse, and safer businesses.

“Right across Mid and East Antrim you will see increased patrols to prevent and detect crime, and build on our Op Road safe initiative to increase our presence across the road network. We will be increasing the number of vehicle checkpoints with a specific emphasis on drink driving to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

“We will also be working closely with businesses to share crime prevention advice and prevent retail crime. This will be done by increasing the number of visible patrols in the retail sector across Mid and East Antrim to reduce offending.

“This time of year can be difficult for many people and never more so than this year. In the past we have seen an increase in the number of domestic abuse incidents over the Christmas period. As part of Op Season’s Greetings we want all victims to know that we are here.
