Lurgan man released on bail again after breach claims

A Lurgan man facing charges linked to a dissident republican plot to kill a prison governor, his officers and a police officer faced court this week after breaching bail conditions.

Damien Duffy aged 42, appeared at Lisburn Magistrates Court on Thursday after he was accused of breaching bail conditions.

Duffy is accused of a variety of charges. Along with his brother Paul Duffy, and their cousin Shane Duffy, 41, the trio face charges relating to preparing acts of terrorism, conspiring to murder and conspiring with each other to cause an explosion.

It is also alleged that the three collected information “with the intention of committing acts of terrorism” and with collecting information likely to be of use to terrorists with all the offences alleged to have occurred in dates between 7 June 2011 and 14 May 2012.

Paul Duffy was released on bail earlier this week and Damien had been released on bail before Christmas.

However Damien was re-arrested this week on claims that he had breached bail.

The 42-year-old with an address in Belfast, was set new bail terms and remanded on his own bail of £5k with a surety of £2k.

He is ordered to reside at his Belfast address and has been set a strict curfew. He is banned from contacting a number of named people including his co accused Paul and Shane Duffy or any crown witnesses.

He has to surrender his passport, report four times per week to police and not travel in a motor vehicle except at specific times.

He is banned from attending any gathering or protest involving dissident republicanism in Northern Ireland, banned from specific areas marked on a map and banned from leaving Northern Ireland.
