Man arrested after PSNI officers assaulted on Antrim Road

A man was arrested after two police officers were assaulted and a quantity of suspected heroin was located following the “routine stop” of a car in the Antrim Road area of north Belfast on July 16.

Detailing the incident, which occurred at approximately 9.30pm on Friday, a PSNI spokesperson said: “Castle Neighbourhood team carried out a routine stop of a car near the Antrim Road’s junction with the Old Cavehill Road.

“The officers very quickly recognised that the male passenger was acting in a suspicious manner. They challenged the male who then became violent and assaulted both officers. Thankfully, both officers sustained minor injuries only and are back on patrol again.

“A search of the male and the car was carried out and an amount of suspected heroin was located.

“In a follow up search of a property in the Altmore area of Antrim, an amount of suspected Class B drugs were located.

“The man (43) was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, including possession of a Class B controlled drug and assault on police. He was released on bail pending further enquiries.”
