Man confesses to raping woman 20 years ago

A man, accused of four counts of raping a woman in the Portadown area around 20 years ago, has been remanded into custody.

Martin Joseph John Creaney with an address at Bank Street, Belfast, appeared before Lisburn Magistrates Court on Thursday morning.

Creaney, aged 55, is accused of four counts of raping a woman on dates between January 1, 1990 and December 31, 1999.

He is also accused of perverting the course of public justice namely providing false information to PSNI on January 7 this year.

The court heard that Creaney had initially denied the charges but had since contacted the police to confess.

His solicitor, Richard Montieth said there would be no application for bail.

However, he asked that the case be progressed as quickly as possible.

Mr Monteith said: “You have her statement and his confession so if the directing officer can’t get that processed by the next remand and have a Public Enquiry, there’s something wrong.”

District Judge Rosemary Watters agreed to legal aid and remanded Creaney into custody to appear before Craigavon Magistrates Court on February 5.
