Man threatened to strangle his partner

A 25-year-old man has appeared before Londonderry Magistrates Court charged with common assault, making a threat to kill and false imprisonment of his partner.

In the dock was Paul Christopher Burke, with an address at Copperthorpe, in Drumahoe, who was further accused of theft of £120, as well as criminal damage to a bank card on January 3.

District Judge Barney McElholm was told Magistrates Court was told that the injured party was in a highly distressed state and very dishevelled when police responded to her 999 telephone call. When they arrived at the scene, she told them she had been locked in the house by her partner and he had assaulted her.

During the incident she alleged Burke threw her to the ground, placed a foot on her throat and pulled her up by the hair.

She alleged the accused told her: “I will strangle you to death.”

Burke was also alleged to have stolen £120 in cash from her and cut up her bank card.

The investigating police officer told the court that the PSNI opposed bail, as they were concerned Burke would interfere with the alleged injured party.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client denies the allegations and claimed he was the one assaulted.

District Judge McElholm release Burke on conditional bail, stipulating that he refrain from any contact with the alleged injured party.

He will appear in court again next month.
