Gerard Patrick Mullen (30), of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to causing damage to the bus and indecent behaviour on April 29.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing alcohol from two supermarkets between January 14 and March 8.

The court heard that Mullen was on a bus travelling to the city from Belfast, when he “dropped his trousers” and began urinating on the bus in front of the other passengers.

The court heard the bus had to be removed from service and a deep clean of the vehicle had cost Translink £100.

None of the passengers present on the bus made a statement of complaint, however the incident was captured on CCTV.

The defendant also admitted stealing cider from Supervalu and a bottle of vodka from Sainsburys. On both occasions, he left the store without paying for the alcohol and was identified by police after they viewed security footage.

Defence counsel Eoghan Devlin told the court his client has been in custody since May.

He said Mullen made full admissions to all the offences during police interview and urged the court to give him credit for his early plea.

District Judge Barney McElholm jailed Mullen for a total of four months.

He also ordered the defendant to pay £100 compensation to Translink, £9.56 to Supervalu and £15.99 to Sainburys.
