Moat Street re-opens after arson attack

Moat Street has now re-opened after the fire which destroyed several cars and caused related damage to a number of homes earlier today, Thursday.

A PSNI spokesman said Detectives were now appealing for information about the early morning fire.

“Shortly before 5am it was reported that a car parked in the street was on fire. Police and NIFRS responded and the fire was extinguished. The car was destroyed as a result of the incident. Damage was also caused to three other cars parked nearby and to the front of a number of houses as a result of the fire,” the spokesman said.

He continued: “Police are treating the fire as malicious but a motive for the attack has not yet been established.”

Detectives would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw anyone in the area of Moat Street, Foyle Road or Ewing Street early this morning to contact CID at Strand Road on the new non-emergency number 101.
