Murder accused ‘may not stand trial’

A Ballymena man accused of the murder of his father may not be fit to stand trial, his solicitor has said.

Gregory Lamont was returned for Crown Court trial, accused of murdering John Lamont on January 15, when he appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court.

Lamont (27), whose address was given as Knockbracken Healthcare Park, Belfast, is further charged with attempting to murder his mother, Elizabeth Lamont, on the same date.

Mrs Lamont sat yards away from the accused during a brief preliminary hearing.

Lamont’s solicitor Seamus Leonard said there were “very complex forensic medical issues” in the case.

“It may well be he is unable to stand trial,” Mr Leonard added.

Lamont was returned for trial, on continuing bail, to Antrim Crown Court on December 19.
