Newtownabbey public warned of ‘spike in online sextortion’

Newtownabbey residents are being alerted to a rise in sextortion scams.

The warning comes from Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, which is backing a police awareness campaign following the increase.

In a statement yesterday (Wednesday), council said: “Police Service of Northern Ireland has made us aware of a recent spike in incidents of online sextortion.

“Sextortion is a form of blackmail where a criminal threatens to reveal intimate images of the victim unless they give in to their demands. These demands are usually money or further intimate pictures.
