Operation Safer Homes

Police in Foyle have launched ‘Operation Safer Homes’ to encourage all householders to make their homes more secure and deter criminals.

Since the start of the new financial year in April 2012, there has been a 19% increase in burglaries in the Foyle Area. In more than 50% of domestic burglaries reported to police, the criminal gained entry to the property via an unlocked door or window. Police are urging householders to take sensible steps to protect their homes and to follow basic crime prevention advice to reduce their homes being targeted by criminals and opportunist thieves. It is imperative that people remember to close and lock windows and doors at night or when the house is unoccupied.

Area Commander, Chief Inspector Jon Burrows is urging local residents to be more vigilant, “As part of Operation Safer Homes, there will be increased police patrols, leaflet drops and an advertising campaign to remind local residents to ensure their homes are secure at all times.

“We would advise all householders to review their security. If your doors aren’t secure, neither is your home. ‘Close It, Lock It and Check It’,” he said.
