Paul Mackin Jnr: Man to appear in court charged with north Belfast murder

Police investigating the murder of Paul Mackin Junior in the Duncairn Parade area of north Belfast have charged a man to court.

The 41-year-old has been charged with murder, grievous bodily harm with intent, and false imprisonment.

A report will also be submitted to the Public Prosecution Service for a number of other offences.

The man is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court on Friday (July 24). Police say as is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man who was arrested as part of the investigation was released unconditionally on Thursday (July 23). He had previously been released on bail to allow for further enquiries.

A 32-year-old man arrested as part of the same investigation has also been released unconditionally.

Three men – aged 32, 40 and 41 – were arrested following the report of an assault on Monday, July 10.

In a subsequent update, detectives advised that, sadly, the injured man, Paul Mackin Junior, had died in hospital and a murder investigation had been launched.

Detective Chief Inspector Jennifer Rea said: “Two of the three men arrested – aged 32 and 40 – have now both been released unconditionally."

Detective Chief Inspector Rea added: “Our thoughts are with Paul’s family at this incredibly difficult time.

“Police would ask that the public avoid speculation on the circumstances around this matter, which is upsetting for the family and friends of Mr Mackin, and could have a detrimental impact on criminal justice proceedings.

“Our investigation is ongoing, and I would appeal to anyone with information to contact us on 101, quoting reference 1454 of 20/07/26.”

Information can also be provided online, or Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
