Pensioner murdered for £375

DETECTIVES in Coleraine have launched a murder investigation after a pensioner died confronting a burglar at his Mountsandel home in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police said yesterday that the burglar made off with just £375 in cash.

72-year-old Bertie (Robert) Acheson, from Glenmore Gardens, died shortly after the break-in which happened around 1.30am on Monday. Shiela, his wife of 44 years, was treated for shock but was unharmed.

During a police appeal on Monday afternoon, the Detective Inspector leading the investigation described the crime as ‘callous’.

Detective Inspector Ian Harrison, said that “a life had been lost for a pitiful amount of money”, revealing that the intruder got away with just £375 in cash.
