Police driver braked sharply to avoid crash

Colin Ramsey (30), from Carson Villas, Upperlands, was also fined a total of £265 for driving while having consumed excess alcohol.

Imposing the penalties, District Judge Alan White told Ramsey that he had a “significant record”, although not drink-related.

Mr White said the period of disqualification would have to reflect the fact that defendant was more than twice the legal limit.

He certified Ramsey suitable to take part in the drink driving rehabilitation course, and encouraged him to take part as it could entitle him to a four-month reduction in his period of disqualification.

A prosecuting lawyer said the incident happened at Main Street in Tobermore on October 23 last, when police on mobile patrol saw a car crossing the central white line.

She said the police vehicle had to brake sharply to avoid colliding with the car.

On speaking to Ramsey, officers noticed his eyes were watery and that he smelled of intoxicating liquor.

He failed a preliminary breath test and was taken to Dungannon police station where he provided a breath specimen, which showed an alcoholic count of 73mgs.

A defence lawyer explained Ramsey had been out in Tobermore that evening and had been staying at his girlfriend’s house.

He said the defendant had decided to go back to a local bar and had only driven about 200 yards when he encountered the police vehicle and was stopped.
