Pomeroy to host Ireland’s longest soapbox race

POMEROY is set to host Ireland’s longest soapbox race this summer.

‘Thrills on the Hills’ will take place on Saturday, August 25th and was officially launched by Cookstown District Chairperson Sean Clarke last week.

The race will start at Pomeroy Main Street and will see soapbox participants taking on breathtaking speeds on some of County Tyrone’s steepest streets.

The race route will see soapboxes from across the County and beyond race down the village’s main street at breathtaking speeds, taking off from Pomeroy’s Credit Union building before coming to a stop at the circuit’s finish line on the Cornamaddy Road.

Speaking at the official launch event on Thursday night, Council chair Sean Clarke was the first to attempt the hair raising race, part funded by Cookstown District Council/

Councillor Clarke said: “I’m delighted to help launch this event, and happy our council has been able to help fund it. This will be a fantastic event and will bring many visitors to the Village of Pomeroy.”

The event is being jointly organised by Pomeroy Players Drama Group, Pomeroy Plunketts GAA Club and Pomeroy Comhaltas.

The weekend will also have lots more action including a fairground, vintage display, fun day sports and the very best of Irish and country music. Gathered at the launch were members from the various groups and business people from the community.

Also speaking at the launch Cllr Cáthal Mallaghan thanked the Council’s Community Services Department and the people of Pomeroy for the support and hard work preparing for this fantastic weekend.
