Poured disinfectant in former partner’s eyes, court hears

A Ballymena man poured disinfectant into his former partner’s eyes following the break-up their relationship, a court has been told.

The allegation was made during a bail application on behalf of Trevor Brian Hayes (41), of Queen Street, at Ballymena Magistrates Court.

Hayes is accused of unlawfully and maliciously causing grievous bodily harm to the woman with intent to do her grievous bodily harm, on September 18.

He is further charged, on the same date, with making a threat to damage a car belonging to the same alleged injured party.

Asked by a Public Prosecution Service lawyer to outline the background to the case, a PSNI officer said that Hayes is alleged to have poured disinfectant liquid into the injured party’s face and eyes.

The woman sustained injuries to her eyes and is still receiving treatment at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital.

The officer said the alleged incident had taken place two days after the woman had “broken off” the relationship which she had been having with Hayes.

Barrister Andrew Moriarty said the allegations were denied by Hayes.

He said the bail application was being made to enable Hayes to make a visit to his father’s home in Broughshane “for even one or two hours”.

He said that provision was in place for Hayes’ nephew to collect him from prison and transport him to his father’s address before returning him to custody.

The police officer opposed bail, saying that the alleged injured party is “quite frightened” by Hayes and is concerned that Hayes’ father lives close to her place of work.

District Judge Desmond Perry refused bail and remanded Hayes in custody to appear again via videolink on November 14.
