£444k of opiates, cannabis and ecstasy seized

POLICE in Londonderry accounted for a fifth of Northern Ireland’s total drug haul this summer seizing nearly half-a-million pounds worth of opiates, cannabis, ecstasy and other narcotics.

Councillor Thomas Conway, Chair of the Londonderry Policing and Community Safety Partnership welcomed 71 drug seizures by the PSNI between April and August.

He said: “I welcome these significant drug seizures in Foyle. Recent statistics issued by the PSNI reveal that in the four months between 1st April 2012 and 31st July 2012 police in Foyle have made a total of 71 drug seizures and removed drugs with an estimated street value of £444,099 from our communities.

“Over 17 per cent of all drugs seized in Northern Ireland during this period were seized in the Derry City Council area.”

He continued: “These significant seizures include over 42.5kg of herbal cannabis, 404 ecstasy tablets and 13grammes of opiate powder. I would like to congratulate all the officers involved in these seizures and welcome the information received from the community that has removed these drugs from our streets.

“The captures show that the police can and will act against drug dealers when they receive the appropriate information from our community. This is effective action against dealers with removal of drugs from our streets.

“These police actions stand in stark contrast to the actions of other groups and I would encourage the community to continue to provide information to the police or the independent charity Crimestoppers in relation to drugs and other criminal activity.”
