Police are trying to establish if there are any links between the incidents and also one in which a car was broken into at Rockfield, which is in the same area. A small sum of money was stolen.

And money was stolen from a car parked at Gleneagles overnight on Thursday and into Friday. Also at Gleneagles, the window of a car was smashed and a bag stolen from inside it. A man dressed in a dark anorak and grey tracksuit tops was seen running from the house.

Detective Inspector Lindsay Kitson said police were keen to hear form anyone who could help identify him.

Across the Foyle, meanwhile, a youth ran off when he was challenged while trying to break into a house at Prehen Park.

Detective Inspector Kitson has urged people in the city to be aware of criminal activity and to secure their homes and vehicles at night.
