As Easter approaches, the thoughts of many people turn to their gardens and home improvements, and the thoughts of criminals turn to the rich pickings they can gain from unsecured tools and equipment. Tools and garden equipment are valuable and often easily stolen and sold on by criminals.

Police are advising householders to keep lawnmowers, power tools and other valuable equipment securely locked away when not in use. It is also important to keep an eye on them when they are being used. Tools should not be left unattended in a public place, for example left in the font garden while the householder is at the back.

Locking equipment away is the first rule of crime prevention, police say.
