Public order offences end up in court

In the first a 50-year-old man appeared before the local court accused of assault and possession of an offensive weapon.

In the dock was Damien Gorman, of Top of the Hill, who is charged with assaulting a man and a woman and making a threat to kill.

He is further charged with possessing a screwdriver.

Gorman was released on his own bail of £400 to reside at an address in Galliagh.

He was instructed to appear in court again in respect of the charges on July 9.

Meanwhile, the second court hearing, a man who smashed a glass door after he ‘head-butted his own reflection’ was given a conditional discharge when he appeared before Londonderry Magistrates Court.

Gerard McCaughey, of Rosskeen Park, was also ordered to pay a £548 compensation to the Ice Wharf.

The court was told that McCaughey, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour and criminal damage on May 2.

The Magistrates Court heard the whole incident had been recorded on CCTV and that the glass on the front door of the bar was smashed after the defendant head-butted it.

Seamus Quigley, defence solicitor, said his client had too much to drink on the night in question.

He said McCaughey had been spooked by his own reflection and had head-butted the door.
