A Magherafelt man was given a six-month suspended jail sentence at the local Magistrates Court on Wednesday on charges of common assault and possessing a joint of cannabis.

The court was told John Paul Henry (40), of Sandymount, was arrested by police following a domestic incident in the town on December 21 last in which his father was punched on the head.

PPS counsel said the joint of cannabis was found in his jacket during a police search at the station.
