Recorded police with mobile phone

A South Derry man who recorded police with his mobile phone during a confrontation outside a nightclub, was fined £100 at Magherafelt Magistrates Court last Wednesday.

Cahal Joseph Patrick Higgins (23), of Sperrin Drive, Magherafelt, was also ordered to pay a £15 offender levy for disorderly behaviour.

The court heard at 2.10am police on public order duties noticed the defendant arguing with a young woman.

Prosecution counsel said on speaking to Higgins he told police to “f*** off” and continued arguing.

Police put on their body cameras and the defendant began using his mobile phone to record them, the lawyer said.

Defence solicitor Stephen Atherton said to his credit the defendant has kept out of trouble for the last two years.

Mr Atherton stressed that the incident in the car park amounted to “no more than swearing”.
