Report hate crime, victims urged

MOST hate crime in the area has reduced in the past year - but homophobic incidents have risen.

There were no reports of homophobic crime between April and June last year but there has been one incident reported so far this year.

Chief Inspector Ken Mawhinney re-issued an appeal to people to report crime particularly if they fall victim to homophobic, racist and sectarian crime.

The area commander said there have been four sectarian incidents reported this year, compared to nine last year. So far this year there has only been one racist incident reported to police, compared with three last year.

Having observed that hate crime was “non-existent” when it came to the Banbridge police report, DPP vice-chair David Griffin urged police to keep a close eye on this type of crime and said said people need to keep reporting it.
