“When investigating this incident, officers became aware of a second attempted burglary. This was at a neighbouring house and also took place overnight.

“I am appealing to anyone with information, or who spotted any suspicious activity in the area, to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 279 of 20/05/20.”

Cllr Causby said: “In recent weeks there have been a number of burglaries and attempted burglaries in Brownstown Park and Clounagh park in the town. “Local residents have become increasingly concerned following the incidents.

“During this pandemic I have seen the best of community spirit and unity but unfortunately I have also seen the worst of opportunism.

“When our residents are separated from their families and support networks incidents like this increase the sense of fear and vulnerability that people already feel”

Cllr Causby said “people who prey on the community for their own gain need to search their conscious.

“These are despicable acts and I sincerely those people responsible are caught and brought before the courts.”

He added: “I am urging the whole community to be more vigilant and to look out for your neighbours.

“Make contact with those around you and ensure that we build on the community spirit already evident during this pandemic.

“Our town has come together at this time of crisis in ways I have never seen and we must all continue that work. We must not let the actions of a few incite fear in our communities. Keep safe”

Meanwhile Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart urged householders to be vigilant to ensure their home is secure after further attempted burglaries were reported in the Clounagh Park area of Portadown.

Mrs Lockhart MP said: “Reports of at least two attempted burglaries in the Clounagh Park area of Portadown is a worrying development in what appears to be a rising trend of this activity in the wider area. My thoughts are with the residents affected by this – it undoubtedly a terrible experience.

“I have been liaising with the local PSNI to ascertain what steps they will be taking to tackle this problem and will be meeting them tomorrow to discuss need for increased patrols. We will also be looking at ways to get key messages out on how to secure your home.

“As the good weather continues the tendency to leave windows and doors open increases but this can be the opportunity thieves are looking for. It is also important to keep valuables out of sight. If you notice anyone acting suspiciously, phone 101 or if an emergency 999.

“Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure in their own property and I would appeal to those involved in this to cease this illegal activity immediately.”
