Rush home to ill husband

A motorist caught travelling at 98mph on the Glenshane Road was fined £125 with a £15 offender levy at Magherafelt Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Kathleen McCloskey (77), of Moneyneany Road, Draperstown, was also given three penalty points.

Prosecuting counsel said the detection on the A6 Glenshane was made in the evening of July 19 2019.

She said the defendant’s car was detected travelling at 98mph, 38mph in excess of the limit for the road.

McCloskey, who was not professionally represented, said she was in a rush back home as her husband had taken ill.

She said it was an emergency and she hadn’t notice what speed she was doing.

Deputy District Judge Noel Dunlop said it was “a high speed” but accepted that it was an emergency situation.
