The word “Traitors” has been daubed on a shutter at his Main Street office.

‘No DUP’ has been painted at other prominent locations in Larne town centre.

Mr Wilson said he was “bemused” by the incident saying that those responsible “do not know their politics”.

“If they want to find out what my views are, I am in the office on a regular basis. I have no difficulty discussing these things with them. I am more than happy to discuss where they think I am going wrong and listen to them but clearly they have not even got the guts to do that. They are cowardly ignoramuses.

“These are people who do not know what they are protesting about. If they are going to engage in political protests, they need to be aware of the issues they are protesting about rather than simply writing nonsense.

“People are angry about the Northern Ireland Protocol and nobody is more angry than me. At least, I have tried to do something about it.”

Mr Wilson suggested that they make their protests against the people who have supported it.

He added: “Given what Gordon Lyons has done in stopping these posts being constructed, he has done more with his pen in the last two weeks than these ignoramuses have done with their paintbrushes.”

DAERA Minister Gordon Lyons MLA has halted work on the construction of permanent inspection facilities for post-Brexit checks on agri-food goods arriving from the United Kngdom.

Commenting on the graffiti on social media, Larne Lough Alliance Cllr Danny Donnelly said: “I’m very sorry to see DUP Sammy Wilson’s office being vandalised in this manner. We may not always agree but this is no way to treat a democratically elected public representative.”
