Scam warning

POLICE in G-District, which covers Londonderry, Limavady, Strabane and Magherafelt have issued a reminder to the public to be alert to various types of frauds/scams being consistently practiced.

There is a continuance of letters and emails being received by people requesting that both personal and banking details be forwarded to an ‘overseas’ government official/solicitor acting on behalf of a deceased person with no known living relatives, to enable millions of dollars to be moved out of the country to the individuals bank account. Prior to the release of money the individual has to forward a sum of money to initiate the procedure. This is a well-publicised scam but is still on going.

We would remind the public - under no circumstances should you disclose details of your bank or building society account numbers to any unauthorised person.

Police are also advising people to be vigilant about bogus callers. If someone calls at your door claiming to collect money for a charity, ask for proof of identification and proof of permission from the charity.

If you have elderly relatives, neighbours, or provide care for anyone who may fall prey to this type of crime, make them aware of these messages. Police are always keen to hear from anyone who may have been targeted by criminals.

If you would like advice on crime prevention and how to make your home safer, please contact your local Crime Prevention Officer on 0845 600 8000.

Remember, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is!
